Forty-Two Senior Student-Athletes Recognized at Second Annual Awards Banquet

FREDERICK, Md.--A total of 42 senior student-athletes were recognized for their academic and athletic accomplishments at the second annual Senior Student-Athlete Awards Banquet at the Whitaker Campus Center at Hood College Sunday evening.
During the evening, each head coach or a representative from the staff spoke about each senior and shared special memories from their time as student-athletes at Hood. In addition, several outstanding senior student-athletes were presented with departmental honors:
Coach’s Award
The Coach’s Award is given to a current male and female
student-athlete who personifies the philosophies of being a
Division III student-athlete and the Hood College athletic motto:
mind, body and spirit.
This year’s male recipient has been a member of
Hood’s men’s basketball team for three years. A native
of Hagerstown, Md., he has appeared in 55 games for Hood, starting
five times. This season he served as co-captain and finished his
career with 109 points, 130 rebounds and 48 assists. He was also a
member of the first Blazer men’s basketball squad to go to
the NCAA Tournament during his junior year and will graduate with a
degree in Social Work. The male Coach’s Award was
presented to Arthur Claybon.
This year’s female recipient is a four-year member of
Hood’s field hockey team and a three-year member of the
lacrosse team. In field hockey, the defender from Hughesville, Md.,
has helped the Blazers record 11 shutouts in addition to scoring
two goals and recording three assists. She is a four-time member of
the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III National
Academic Squad and in 2007, was named to the Intercollegiate
Women’s Lacrosse Coaches’ Association Honor Roll. In
three seasons of lacrosse, she compiled 14 goals and four assists.
She will graduate with a degree in mathematics and has secured a
job as a mathematician with the Office of Naval Intelligence.
The female Coach’s Award was presented to Christa
Lundskow.
Dean’s Award
The Dean’s Award is given to a current male and female
student-athlete who embodies all of the desirable characteristics
of a good teammate and friend
This year’s male recipient is a native of Baltimore, Md.,
and was a four-year member of Hood’s men’s soccer team.
Playing in 50 games for the Blazers, he has scored two goals and
taken 11 shots as a defender. He was instrumental in laying a solid
foundation for Hood’s men’s soccer program back in 2005
and will graduate next month with a degree in elementary and
special education. The male Dean’s Award was
presented to Jason Donnelly.
This year’s female recipient is a four-year member of
Hood’s field hockey and women’s lacrosse teams. As a
midfielder/defender in field hockey, she started 56 of 59 games for
Hood, scoring two goals and tallying five assists. On the lacrosse
field, the native of Silver Spring, Md., has started every game of
her career in goal. This season, she became Hood’s all-time
leader in saves and has posted three shutouts in her career. A
special education major, she has been accepted into the social work
grad school program at UMBC. The female Dean’s Award
was presented to “Chooch” Lauren Lieb.
Kim Servedio Award
The Kim Servedio Award is given in honor of a former women’s
soccer player who passed away tragically in 1998. The award is
given to a current student-athlete who best embodies Kim’s
characteristics of sincerity, selflessness, and optimism.
This year, the award goes to a member of the women’s soccer
team. This senior ranks sixth all-time at Hood in career goals with
11 – four of which were game-winners. The Rockville, Md.,
native also ranks third all-time in career assists with nine and
fifth in points with 31. She will graduate with a degree in
Management. This year’s Kim Servedio Award was
presented to Kristina Rendon.
President’s Award
The President’s Award is given to a current male and female
student-athlete who has given outstanding service to his or her
team, the athletic department, the Hood College community and the
student body.
This year, the male recipient has been an integral part of
Hood’s cross country team as well as the track and field team
which moved to varsity status last year. For cross country, the
Frederick, Md., native owns the school records for the Junior 8K
and the Senior 8K. He is a Management major with a minor in German.
This year’s male President’s Award winner is
Faraz Shoai.
The female recipient of the President’s Award has been a
third baseman on Hood’s softball team for the past two years
and was a member of the Blazers’ 2007 NCAA Tournament team.
This year, the Baltimore, Md., native hit her first career homerun
against Penn-State Abington. Her freshman year, she served as
Hood’s starting goalie for the women’s soccer team,
amassing 121 saves in 16 games. She is a law and society major and
also served at the President of the Student Athlete Advisory
Council this year. This year’s female
President’s Award winner is Kate Hassell.
Scholar-Athlete Award
The Scholar-Athlete Award goes to a current male and female
student-athlete who maintains outstanding academic achievement,
demonstrates team and campus leadership and embodies the Division
III philosophy.
The male recipient of this award hails from Myersville, Md., and
is a founding member of the men’s soccer program. He has
served as a team captain and a solid defender for four years. This
season, he was named Third Team Academic All-American. A political
science major with a 3.95 grade-point average, he ranks fifth
all-time at Hood in points with 17, scoring seven goals and
recording three assists. This year’s male recipient
of the Scholar-Athlete Award
is Shane McCarrick.
The female recipient is an outside hitter on Hood’s
volleyball team from Torrance, California. She ranks second
all-time in career kills with 834 and career aces with 213. She was
named to the All-A-W-C-C first-team as a sophomore and a junior,
and earned honorable mention notice as a freshman. This season, she
led the Blazers in attacks, kills and aces. She is a double-major
in mathematics and economics with a minor in business and boasts a
3.89 grade-point average. She is also the banquet chair on the
Student Athlete Advisory Council. This year’s female
recipient of the Scholar-Athlete Award is Lindsey Nagy.
Trustee’s Award
The Trustee’s Award is given to a current male and female
student-athlete who has shown outstanding leadership to the team,
athletic department and the Hood College Community.
The male recipient is an English secondary education major with a
minor in management. He has been an integral part of Hood’s
cross country and track and field teams for the past four years,
helping in the transition of the programs from club teams to
varsity sports. In 2006, the native of Pompton Lake, N.J., was
named to the All-CAC Academic team for cross country. A middle
distance runner and team captain for the track team, up until this
year he held the school record for the 800 meters and the 1500
meters. The male recipient of the Trustee’s Award is
Steve Delaney.
The female recipient is a senior from Newburg, Md., who has
excelled as a two-sport athlete at Hood, playing volleyball for
four years and softball for three. A libero for the volleyball
team, she finished her career ranked second all time in digs and
sixth in games played. She also holds the record for digs in a
single game. This year, she was named to the 2007 ESPN the Magazine
Academic All-District II Third Team, an award she also won twice in
softball. Also a utility player on Hood’s softball team,
Bussey was named to the Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch
Coaches Association All-Atlantic First Team in addition to being
named a member of the All-AWCC second team her freshman and
sophomore years. She is a double major in English and
communications and currently works as an intern at National
Geographic Magazine. The female recipient of the
Trustee’s Award is Jamie Bussey.
Most Outstanding Student-Athlete
Award
The Most Outstanding Student-Athlete Award is given to a current
male and female student who has demonstrated exemplary athletic
prowess throughout his or her four years at Hood.
The male recipient is a founding member and captain of
Hood’s men’s soccer team. For the past four years, the
Hauppauge, N.Y., native has made his mark on the soccer record
books. He ranks first all-time at Hood in career goals with 30,
assists with 19 and points with 79. A business major, he has also
recorded two career hat tricks and eight multi-goal games. He holds
multiple single season records for the Blazers and led the team
this year with eight goals. The male recipient of the Most
Outstanding Student-Athlete Award is Tom Noonan.
The female recipient has been a standout on Hood’s
women’s swim team for the past four years. The senior from
Sykesville, Md., holds five individual school records and five
relay records. Her freshman year, she was named the AWCC Most
Outstanding Swimmer, and her sophomore year, won four individual
AWCC titles. A double-major in chemistry and economics, she was
named the Co-CAC Women’s Swimming Athlete of the week twice
in her career. This year, she qualified for finals in three
individual events, the 400 individual medley, the 500 free and the
1650 free, at the CAC Championship meet. The female
recipient of the Most Outstanding Student-Athlete Award is Amy
Kaufman.
