Blazers Start Strong, Come Up Short at Goucher, 66-50

TOWSON, Md.--The Hood College women's basketball team (0-4) enjoyed a solid first half but couldn't hang on late, falling 66-50 to the Goucher College Gophers (2-2) Monday in nonconference action.

Junior Sara Wastler got the Blazers on the board with a triple on Hood's third possession and Hood maintained the upperhand for the majority of the first half. Hood's biggest lead was five after sophomore Christi Valdez hit 1-of-2 from the foul line to put the Blazers on top 20-15 with 8:04 to play in the stanza. But four minutes later the Gophers cashed in on a transition layup by Shadae Swan, giving Goucher its first lead of the contest, 23-22 and the Gophers took a slim 29-27 edge into the lockerroom.

Hood was unable to regain the lead in the second half as the Gophers connected on 12-of-20 from the field and 12-of-17 from the charity stripe to close out the 16-point victory.

Sophomore Jen Willison finished with a season-high 20 points on 8-of-15 from the field and 4-of-6 from the line. Junior Jessica Parrish netted double figures for the first time this season with 12 in addition to picking off three steals. Wastler finished with five points and seven rebounds.

The Blazers engage in their first-ever Capital Athletic Conference contest Wednesday at York College (Pa.). Tip is slated for 6 p.m.
