Willison's Double-Double Paces Hood Women to 65-56 Win Over Gallaudet
WASHINGTON D.C.--Freshman Jennifer Willison registered her fifth double-double of the season, scoring a career-high 22 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, to lead the Hood College women's basketball team to a 65-56 victory over the Gallaudet University Bison Thursday evening at The Field House.
Hood (2-13) netted a season-high 65 points and earned its first road victory of the season over future Capital Athletic Conference rival Gallaudet (2-14).
The Blazers held the upperhand for the majority of the first half, allowing the Bison to only briefly hold a lead. A pair of free throws by Willison gave the Blazers a 21-19 edge at the 6:08 mark and Hood never trailed again. The Blazers took a 35-28 advantage into intermission.
In the second half, Gallaudet pulled to within 48-46 on a jumper by Tamijo Foronda with just over six minutes to go in regulation. But the Blazers put the Bison away with a 9-0 spurt which gave them their largest lead of the half, 57-46, with 3:50 to go and Gallaudet got no closer than seven the rest of the way. Senior Dana Shook and freshman Jessica Nease drilled three-pointers in the decisive run. In addition, sophomore Sara Wastler, Hoodýs clutch free throw shooter, nailed all six of her attempts from the stripe in the final 1:38.
Willison hit 10-of-16 from the floor for a game-high 22 points, eclipsing her previous high of 20 set against Christopher Newport University on Dec. 9. Shook finished with 12 points and three assists while sophomore Whitney Schultheis tallied a career-best 11 points off the bench, including three three-pointers, and dished out four assists.
The Blazers shot 40.7 percent from the field and connected on 10-of-13 from the foul line. Gallaudet had three players in double figures, led by Foronda's 18. Jessica Salisbury recorded a double-double of 10 points and a game-high 15 boards in the losing cause.
Hood returns to action Saturday against its second straight CAC opponent, the University of Mary Washington, at 4 p.m. in the second game of a doubleheader at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School. UMW is ranked No. 19 in the latest D3Hoops.com national poll. Admission is free for all students 18 and under.
