Mary Washington Sweeps Hood Softball, 10-2 & 8-0

FREDERICKSBURG, Va.--The Hood College softball team (15-7, 5-3 CAC) saw its 13-game win streak come to an end Wednesday, dropping a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader to the University of Mary Washington Eagles (20-13, 8-2 CAC) by scores of 10-2 and 8-0, both in five innings.

The Eagles broke the game open in the bottom of the second with five runs on just one basehit and four Blazer fielding errors. Jamie Gardner delivered a two-out two-run single in the top of the third inning to cut the Eagle lead to 6-2. But Mary Washington came right back in its half of the third to plate three more runs and went on to take the opener, 10-2, in five innings.

In the nightcap, Mary Washington's Stephanie Watkins pitched a six-hit shutout to complete the sweep for the Eagles. Sara Wastler was 2-for-3 while Katherine Law, Ashley Lenhart, Gardner and Sam Smith all collected basehits. Mary Washington scored four runs in the bottom of the first, three more in the third and one in the fourth to clinch the victory.

Hood looks to get back on the winning track Thursday, April 10, against York College (Pa.) at 3:30 p.m. Hood's nonconference doubleheader with Wilson slated for Sunday April 6 has been cancelled due to a scheduling conflict.
