Frostburg Sweeps Hood, 4-1 & 10-1
FROSTBURG, Md.--The Hood College softball team concluded its
regular season Tuesday at Frostburg State University, falling 4-1
in the opener and 10-1 in five innings in the nightcap.
Hood (11-19) got on the board in the top of the first inning when
Jamie Bussey drove in Sara Wastler who led off the frame with a
single up the middle. But the Blazers managed just one basehit the
rest of the game, that coming on a Kara Robert double in the top of
the seventh.
The Bobcats drew even in the bottom of the second on an RBI-single
by Samantha Quirin. Frostburg struck for three more runs in the
bottom of the fifth. Lori Potts had a two-run double in the
inning.
Jamie Gardner suffered the loss, allowing four runs over six
innings. She surrendered seven basehits and struck out five along
the way.
In the nightcap, the Bobcats jumped on the Blazers early, plating
10 runs on eight basehits in the bottom of the first. Starter Kara
Robert retired leadoff hitter Potts on a grounder to first but the
next 10 hitters reached and all of them eventually scored to stake
the Bobcats to a commanding 10-0 lead.
The Blazers collected nine hits but stranded eight baserunners,
settling for a single run in the top of the fifth. In that frame,
the first three batters, Sara Wastler, Katherine Law and Jamie
Gardner all singled to load the bases with no outs. Kate Hassell
knocked in Wastler on a grounder to second, but relief pitcher
Meghan Dabkowski got Stephanie Gardner and Alecia Weddle to pop up
to retire the side.
Wastler, Law and Tamara Maggard all registered two hits in the
ballgame.
The Blazers travel to Chambersburg, Pa., Saturday to defend their
Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference crown. Top-seeded Hood takes
on No. 4-seed Wells College at 10 a.m. in the opening round game.
