WINCHESTER, Va.--The Hood College softball team dropped a
non-conference doubleheader Saturday to the Shenandoah University
Hornets by scores of 5-0 and 5-1.
Hood is now 9-15 overall with three regular season matchups
remaining.
Sophomore Katie Haskins pitched a complete-game one-hit shutout for
the Hornets in the opener. Christine Harvey collected Hood's lone
basehit of the ballgame when she led off the fifth inning with a
double down the leftfield line. Harvey would advance to third on a
wild pitch but was stranded as Haskins retired the next two Blazer
hitters on strikes and got Jamie Gardner to fly out to left.
Gardner took the loss for Hood allowing five earned runs on seven
hits with one strikeout and no walks.
In the nightcap, the Hornets scored a pair of runs in the first two
innings to take an early 4-0 lead. But the Blazers broke through in
the top of the fourth when Ashley Lenhart lined a two-out single to
left which plated Stephanie Gardner.
Leadoff hitter Sara Wastler collected a pair of hits in the contest
for her fifth multi-hit performance of the season.
Tamara Maggard suffered the loss for the Blazers after tossing five
innings and allowing four earned runs on six hits.
The Blazers have a busy week ahead as they travel to Staunton, Va.,
Thursday for an important Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference
doubleheader against Mary Baldwin College. Hood then journeys to
Cresson, Pa., for a non-league twinbill at Mount Aloysius. The
Blazers then return home Sunday for their regular season finale
with Juniata College. Hood will honor its graduating seniors before
the contest.
