WALKERSVILLE, Md.--The Hood College men's cross country team hosted its third annual Hood Open Saturday at Heritage Farm Park.
A total of 123 competitors from 20 schools braved the raw and soggy conditions on this day, which saw Washington and Jefferson freshman Scott Ryan cross the tape in 28:04.80 to claim top honors. Ryan edged fellow freshman Dan Swain of St. Mary's College (Md.) by just three seconds.
But it was the York College (Pa.) Spartans who captured the team title after placing its five point-earners among the top 13 finishers.
Hood tied for fifth place with Penn State Altoona in a field of 14 complete teams. Senior William Andrews was Hood's top finisher, completing the 8,000-meter course in 29:00.84 for 19th place. Freshman Brett Shelley followed close behind in 22nd with a clocking of 29:28.65. Senior Blair Ames ran No. 3 for Hood with a time of 30:48.31 while classmate Brendan Greenlees crossed the finish line in 30:56.82. Dave Gudeman, Jr., rounded out the Hood scorers in 31:16.18.
