Five Cross Country Runners Earn Medalist Honors at McDaniel Meet

WESTMINSTER, Md.--The Hood College men's and women's cross
country teams competed at the McDaniel College Green Terror
Challenge Saturday. Nine schools participated in both a 5K and a 3K
on the day.
Danielle Sgro (21:54), Lauren Smith (22:03), Nick Manning (17:44)
and William Andrews (17:57) were medalists in the 5K while Andrews
(10:51) and April Penn (14:14) were Hood's top finishers in the
3K.
In the team competition, the Hood men took sixth in both the 5K
and the 3K, while the Blazer women placed fifth in the 5K and 3rd
in the 3K.
"It was nice to come away with some awards," said head coach Brent
Ayer. "Nick, William and Danielle always run tough. April was a
pleasant surprise and I thought freshmen Lauren Smith and Corlin
Blakey ran well.
"The team has been passing around a respiratory infection for the
last week, which bothered about half the squad. And, we were
missing several potential contributors. We will be much improved by
late October."
Several Blazers competed in their first collegiate cross country
race Saturday, including Bradley Tritsch, Jeff Dickens and Tim
Kuhn. Additionally, Andrews and Blair Ames competed in both the 5K
and the 3K.
The race included squads from Goucher College, Hagerstown
Community College, McDaniel College, Montgomery Community College,
Shenandoah University, Shepherd University, Villa Julie College,
and York College (Pa.).
Hood returns to action Saturday at the Wilmington College
Invitational.
