Track & Field Teams Set 10 School Records at Battleground Relays
FREDERICKSBURG, Va.--The Hood College men's and women's track
& field teams lowered 10 school records at the Battleground
Relays hosted by the University of Mary Washington.
Hood was one of eight teams competing in the invitational, which
generated only individual results. Click here for the complete
results.
Winners included Danielle Sgro, who broke Kelly Buriak's school
record in the 10,000 meters (43.10); William Andrews, who became
the first Hood athlete to contest the 10,000 meters (37:22.20); and
Corey DeMaster in the Triple Jump (38' 6 3/4").
Steve Delaney picked up two new school records, lowering his mark
in the 1500 meters to 4:25.91. He came back to complete a highly
unusual double, setting the record in the 400 hurdles in
1:04.80.
Matt Haynes tossed the javelin 150'10" in just his third ever
competition, earning a Capital Athletic Conference qualifying
mark.
The 4x100 team of Ryan Jenkins, Tomilayo Komolafe, Mike Cahill and
Faizal Johnson carved eight tenths from the 4x100 record, producing
the third-fastest time in the CAC this season (45.41).
Faizal Johnson posted an 11.48 in the prelims of the 100 meter
dash, just .03 off Mike Blackman's school record from the 2004
initial club season.
On the women's side, Erica Hamor lengthened her school records in
the hammer (60'2") and javelin (65'6") throws. Katie Reichard
extended her discus record with a throw of 81'4."
The 4x100 meter relay team of Anika Watley, Meredith McDonough,
Amanda Kwiatkowski and Katie Thomas dropped a half second off the
previous school record (58.58).
"Steve, Faizal & Matt were on fire today," said head coach
Brent Ayer. "When Steve believes in himself, he can do amazing
things. The 400 hurdles is one of the most demanding events in
track and he set a school record in his first attempt, after
setting the school record in the 1500.
"Faizal looked very good in the 100 and the 4x100 and 4x200. He was
a middle distance runner in high school that we moved down. That
doesn't happen very often with me, but he looked the part
today.
"Matt joined us off the swim team and has the fourth-best javelin
throw in a tough conference in his first month of throwing, ever.
He has been improving 15' a week. Noone can keep this up, but his
potential is scary."
The Blazers return to action Saturday at Washington &
Jefferson.
