WILLIAMSPORT, Md. - Hood College swept Lycoming for the first Commonwealth Conference men's tennis win in school history, defeating the Warriors 9-0.
The Blazers pulled a clean sweep in doubles to get the match started on the right foot. Vladislav Sluchenkov (Vladivostok, Russia / Garmonia) and Chad Love (Boonsboro, Md. / Boonsboro) teamed for an 8-3 win at first doubles, while Anthony King (Elizabethtown, Pa. / Elizabethtown) and Tyler Shuck (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) won by an identical score at third doubles. At second doubles, Luis Cotto (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) and Philip Roedig (Farmingdale, N.Y. / St. John the Baptist) defeated Evan Bennetch and Patrick Herrington 8-4.
The same six Hood players picked up singles victories to complete the sweep. King was victorious 6-1, 6-0 against Joe Amento at third singles for the biggest win of the day. Shuck dropped just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 win over Joe Rudderow at No. 2 singles. Sluchenkov was a 6-4, 6-2 winner at first singles. Love needed a 12-10 win in a pro set after splitting the first two sets 6-0, 3-6 against Jordan Dubinsky.
Fifth and sixth singles were contested via pro sets. Roedig edged Bennetch 7-5 in a tiebreaker to claim a 9-8 win. Cotto dispatched Herrington 8-3.
King stretched his singles win streak to two matches.
The win was the first victory as men's head coach by Tim Halter, in his second season turning the program around. It also snapped a 27-dual match losing streak dating back to the 2011-12 season.
Hood will look to make it two in a row when FDU-Florham visits the Hood Tennis Complex on April 13.
