Swimming Caps Dual Meet Schedule with Sweep
ALTOONA, Pa.--The Hood College swimming teams closed their dual
meet schedules with a sweep of host Penn State Altoona
Saturday.
The Blazer women posted a 113-79 victory to finish 8-3 overall,
while the men were 99-71 winners and even their record at 4-4.
The Hood women dominated the afternoon by winning seven of the 11
events and adding four runner-up finishes.
Freshman Sarah Haney led the way with a pair of individual wins and
a relay victory. She captured the 100-yard butterfly (1:07.34) and
the 100-yard breaststroke (1:15.24) and joined sophomore Lenore
Brown, freshman Ashley Garyn and sophomore Katie Hitchens to take
home the 200-yard medley relay (2:04.15).
Sophomore Amy Kaufman won the 200-yard freestyle (2:06.57) and the
100-yard backstroke (1:08.63), while freshman Danielle Sgro won the
1,000-yard freestyle (12:08.41) and the 500-yard freestyle
(5:57.12).
Brown added second-place finishes in the 200-yard individual medley
(2:25.71) and the 100-yard freestyle (58.87), and Hitchens was
second in the 50-yard freestyle (27.35).
Hood's final runner-up showing was in the 200-yard freestyle relay,
where Kaufman and Garyn teamed with freshmen Katie Bergin and Kara
Cruice to finish in 1:53.72.
On the men's side, sophomore Jason Kinder was one of three triple
winners and set a school record in the 500-yard freestyle to
highlight the day.
Kinder began the meet by joining freshmen Eric Walton, Matt Haynes
and Jeff Dickens to claim the 200-yard medley relay (1:58.18).
Kinder later won the 200-yard individual medley (2:16.23) before
turning in a winning time of 5:03.64 in the 500-yard freestyle,
easily surpassing his former school mark of 5:06.64 set last
season.
Juniors Stu Kaufman and Fran Pederson also won three events.
Kaufman captured the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:36.87) and the
100-yard backstroke (1:08.74), and he was also a member of the
winning 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:47.50) as were Pederson,
Walton and Dickens.
Pederson also won the 200-yard freestyle (2:06.68) and the 100-yard
freestyle (56.61), while junior Matt Caron captured the 50-yard
freestyle (24.26) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.76).
The Blazer women look to win their third Atlantic Women's Colleges
Conference championship Feb. 4-5 at Chatham College in Pittsburgh.
Both the men's and women's squads will then compete in the Grove
City Invitational Feb. 9-11.
