Swimming Splits with Bethany

FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College swimming teams split a dual meet with visiting Bethany (W.Va.) College Saturday afternoon.

The Blazer women posted a 103-79 victory to improve to 7-3 on the year, while the men dropped a narrow 87-86 decision and are now 3-4.

The men's meet was a tight battle that came down the final event--the 400 freestyle relay--which the Bison captured to earn 11 team points that put them over the top.

Hood dominated the day otherwise, winning seven of the other 10 events.

Sophomore Jason Kinder won three races--the 200 individual medley (2:14.25), the 200 butterfly (school-record 2:11.10) and the 500 freestyle (5:17.3). His time in the 200 butterfly shattered his former school mark of 2:18.03 he set last year.

Junior Matt Caron captured the 50 (23.89) and 100 (51.88) freestyles, freshman Jeff Dickens won the 1,000 freestyle (14:53.17) and junior Stu Kaufman won the 200 backstroke (2:16.72).

The Blazer women took control early, winning seven of the first eight events, and were never threatened.

Sophomore Lenore Brown, freshman Sarah Haney, sophomore Amy Kaufman and freshman Ashley Garyn began the day by setting a school record in the 400 medley relay (4:29.74), and Kaufman followed by claiming the 1,000 freestyle (11:31.52). She later added a win in the 200 butterfly (2:29.87).

Brown also won two individual events--the 200 individual medley (2:25.05) and the 200 backstroke (2:23.89). Haney took home the 100 freestyle (59.65) and sophomore Katie Hitchens claimed the 50 freestyle (26.68).

Hood swam the final two races as exhibitions and therefore did not accumulate any team points from those events.

The Blazers return to action Saturday when they visit Penn State Altoona for a dual meet beginning at 2 p.m.
