Records Fall as Men's Swimming Finishes Second, Women Third at Randolph-Macon Invitational
ASHLAND, Va.--The Hood College swimming teams combined for nine
victories, nine runner-up finishes and seven school records at the
Randolph-Macon College Yellow Jacket Invitational this past
weekend.
The Blazer men won eight events and set six school marks en route
to finishing second out of four teams with 354 points, while the
women won one event, had five runner-up finishes and set one school
record to place third out of 13 squads with 239.5 points.
Sophomore Jason Kinder and freshman Jimmy Shea tied Virginia
Military Institute's Stuart Kraft for men's top scoring honors with
48 points.
Kinder won three individual events--the 100-yard backstroke in a
school-record 57.66, the 200-yard backstroke in a school-record
2:05.80 and the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:54.80)--and was also a
member of three relay teams--the 200-yard medley, the 400-yard
medley and the 800-yard freestyle--that won in school-record
times.
Shea set a school and pool record with his winning time of 4:39.44
in the 400-yard individual medley and also captured the 200-yard
freestyle (1:55.38) and the 200-yard individual medley
(2:08.93).
Freshman Matt Haynes took second in the 50-yard (23.00) and
100-yard (52.09) freestyles and was also fifth in the 200-yard
freestyle (1:59.82).
Junior Matt Caron finished third in the 100-yard butterfly
(1:02.04) and was fifth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:20.53)
and the 100-yard freestyle (52.80).
Freshman Kyle Zehner placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke
(2:38.22) and added sixth-place finishes in the 200-yard individual
medley (2:31.25) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.90)
Freshman Eric Walton was sixth in the 50-yard freestyle (26.54) and
the 100-yard butterfly (1:15.02) and added a 10th-place finish in
the 100-yard freestyle (1:01.17).
Freshman Jeff Dickens was seventh in the 50-yard freestyle (26.66)
and the 100-yard backstroke (1:22.51) and later placed 11th in the
100-yard freestyle (1:03.96).
Zehner, Dickens, Walton and Caron capped the meet by winning the
400-yard freestyle relay (3:59.04).
The Hood women were led by sophomore Amy Kaufman, who tied for
fifth in individual scoring with 40 points.
Kaufman won the 500-yard freestyle (5:39.96), finished second in
the 1,650-yard freestyle (19:16.77) and was fourth in the 400-yard
individual medley (5:08.83).
She also teamed with sophomore Lenore Brown, freshman Sarah Haney
and sophomore Katie Hitchens to set a school record (1:59.44) in a
fourth-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay and was a member
of runner-up teams in the 400-yard medley relay (4:32.20) and the
800-yard freestyle relay (8:55.00).
Brown also turned in several strong individual efforts, finishing
second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:24.24), third in the 100-yard
backstroke (1:06.92) and fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:09.11).
She tied for 10th in scoring with 35 points.
Hitchens tied for second in the 50-yard freestyle (26.34) and
placed seventh in the 100-yard freestyle (1:00.91), while Haney was
fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:49.52), sixth in the
100-yard butterfly (1:09.6) and seventh in the 100-yard
breaststroke (1:17.38).
Sophomore Chloe Gandy, freshman Ashley Garyn, freshman Danielle
Sgro and Hitchens teamed to finish fourth in the 200-yard freestyle
relay (1:55.66).
Both the Blazer men's and women's squads are off until January 7
when they visit Salisbury for a dual meet beginning at 2 p.m.
