Swimming Opens Season with Wins
FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College men's and women's swimming
teams opened their seasons with victories Saturday afternoon at the
Hood Aquatics Center.
The Blazer women picked up a pair of Atlantic Women's Colleges
Conference wins by defeating Wells 82-40 and Mary Baldwin 75-47. On
the men's side, Hood routed Wells 83-7.
Sophomores Lenore Brown, Katie Hitchens and Amy Kaufman joined
freshman Ashley Garyn to win the 200-yard medley relay in
2:04.19.
Kaufman later added victories in the 200-yard freestyle (2:10.91),
the 200-yard butterfly (2:29.75) and the 100-yard butterfly
(1:08.49), while Hitchens won the 50-yard freestyle (26.55) and the
100-yard freestyle (1:00.49).
Brown won the 200-yard backstroke (2:24.15), finished second in the
100-yard breaststroke (1:16.01) and placed fifth in the 200-yard
individual medley (2:57.28).
Garyn added runner-up effort in the 500-yard freestyle (6:28.79)
and was third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:14.47) and the 100-yard
freestyle (1:03.38).
Sophomore Chandra Fadoul won the 200-yard individual medley
(2:29.41), was second in the 200-yard backstroke (3:05.32) and
placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:25.30)
Freshman Katie Bergin was the runner-up in the 1,000-yard freestyle
(14:10.21).
The men dominated the afternoon by winning all 13 events and adding
four second-place finishes.
Sophomore Jason Kinder and freshmen Jimmy Shea, Matt Haynes and
Eric Walton captured the 200-yard medley relay in 1:50.66, and all
four later enjoyed strong individual performances.
Kinder won the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.31), the 200-yard butterfly
(2:18.03) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:09.80), and Shea took home
the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.96), the 200-yard breaststroke
(2:29.76) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:08.30).
Haynes followed with victories in the 50-yard freestyle (22.87),
the 100-yard freestyle (51.71), and the 100-yard butterfly
(1:01.16), while Walton placed second in the 200-yard freestyle
(2:29.31) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:14.44).
Junior Stu Kaufman won the 500-yard freestyle (5:45.42) and was
second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:24.92) and the 200-yard
backstroke (2:25.91).
Freshman Jeff Dickens won the 100-yard backstroke (1:28.20) and
added third-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (30.86) and the
100-yard freestyle (1:08.10).
Walton, Dickens, Kauffman and Kinder closed out the meet by winning
the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:49.71).
