Blazers Finish Sixth at CAC Meet

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md.-- The Hood College men's swim team closed their 2008-09 season with a sixth place finish in the team competition at the 2009 Capital Athletic Conference championships at the ARC Aquatics Center hosted by St. Mary's College (Md.).

The Blazers improved on their seventh-place effort from a year ago and accumulated 154 points to finish 48 points ahead of Gallaudet University.  

In the final competition of his Blazer career, senior Matt Haynes lowered his school record in the 100 free by 0.47 seconds, logging a time of 49.14 in the prelims to finish 11th and qualify for the consolation heat. He missed qualifying for finals by just 0.27 seconds. Haynes then clocked a time of 49.28 to place eighth in the consolation heat.

Three other Blazers also competed in the 100 free. Kyle Atras trimmed close to three seconds off his season-best with a time of 1:02.58 while A.J. Smith (1:06.85) shaved 3.05 seconds off his season best and Thomas Williams (1:12.01) set a personal best by 3.79 seconds.

In the morning prelims, Chris Moreland took 13th in the 200 breast with a time of 2:26.97, also close to a three-second drop off his season-best. Moreland trimmed 0.77 seconds off that time in the consolation heat to finish 15th overall in 2:26.20.

Haynes, Moreland, Chris Nemecek and Atras closed the meet with a seventh-place finish in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:35.70.
