Moreland Wins Consolation Heat in 400 IM at CAC Champs

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md.--Junior Chris Moreland won the consolation heat of the 400 IM Saturday to highlight the Hood College men's swim team's efforts on the second day of competition at the 2009 Capital Athletic Conference Championships.

Moreland posted a school record time of 4:35.94 and won the heat by more than four seconds, good for ninth place overall. His clocking bested the previous school record of 4:39.44 held by Jimmy Shea from the 2005-06 season.  

Chris Nemecek bested his school record in the 100 fly in the prelims, clocking in at 55.20, 00.49 faster than his previous time. That time qualified Nemecek for the consolation final where he placed eighth in 55.91.

Matt Haynes advanced to the consolation heat of the 200 free. He finished fifth in that heat (13th overall) in 1:51.33, breaking the previous school record of 1:52.20 (Jason Kinder, Jan. 20, 2007).

Kyle Atras placed 24th in the 200 free in 2:21.52, shaving more than 14 seconds off his season-best.

A.J. Smith and Thomas Williams swam the 100 breast and placed 20th (1:22.87) and 21st (1:23.82), respectively.

In relay action, the men's 200 medley team of Haynes, Moreland, Nemecek and Atras took sixth in 1:50.85, while the 800 free relay squad of Moreland, Haynes, Smith and Williams finished seventh in 9:15.99.

Hood is in sixth place heading into the final day of racing and own a 47-point advantage over seventh-place Gallaudet. Preliminary action resumes Sunday at 10 a.m. from the ARC Aquatics Center at St. Mary's College (Md.).
