DeMaster's Goal in Double Overtime Clinches 2-1 Win for Hood Men

Corey DeMaster
WAYNESBURG, Pa.--Senior Corey DeMaster booted his second goal of the season and seventh of his Blazer career with 1:29 left in the second overtime session to propel the Hood College men's soccer team (2-7) to a 2-1 nonconference win over the Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets (1-10) Tuesday evening.
Hood halted a four-game losing skid with the win and picked up its first road victory of the season. Sophomore Michael Yencho got the Blazers on the board in the 26th minute when he tallied his second score of the season off a feed from classmate Conor Prachar. The Yellow Jackets knotted the score at 1-1 with just 1:14 remaining in the first half on a goal by Chris Crimone.
Hood and Waynesburg played to a scoreless second half but freshman keeper William Lane came up with several clutch saves in his first start in the net. He stuffed Nick Munnell with just 29 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime.
In the first extra session, Hood was unable to get a shot off but Waynesburg's four attempts all sailed wide, and the Blazers found themselves in their second straight double overtime affair.
Lane made three more huge saves in the second extra session to keep the Blazers' hopes alive. Then in the 109th minute, Waynesburg was whistled for a foul, resulting in a direct kick for DeMaster. He managed to hook his attempt past Luke Navickas for the golden goal and send the Blazers home winners.
Lane earned his first victory and made a career-high 14 saves for Hood, while Navickas had four stops for the Yellow Jackets in defeat.
"It was rough at times, but in the end we deserved this win," said Prachar. "We had more heart and we outworked them."
The Blazers look to use the momentum from this hard-fought victory Saturday when they host Capital Athletic Conference rival Wesley College at 1 p.m. Hood will honor its seven seniors before the contest.
