McCulloh Sets Record Against No. 3 Stevenson
FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College junior Joseph McCulloh (Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill) made a school record and Division III season-high 34 saves, but the Blazers fell 15-1 to No. 3 Stevenson.
McCulloh broke the eight-year-old Hood mark of 27 saves by Sam Hoffman. He also surpassed the Division III season-best of 33 by Lyndon State's Marcus Bessette on March 1.
The junior also had 14 ground balls.
The Blazers (3-9, 0-4 Commonwealth) limited the Mustangs to just two goals in the first quarter, but Stevenson (11-1, 4-0) added five more to stretch the lead to 7-0 with 2:15 left in the half. After Joe Balestrieri scored, however, Randolph Clark (Chesapeake Beach, Md. / Northern) won the face off and moved the ball to Sean Murphy (Chesapeake, Va. / Grassfield). Murphy connected with Alex Villegas (New Windsor, Md. / Francis Scott Key) to get Hood on the scoreboard. Stevenson added a late goal to make it 8-1 at the half.
The Mustangs scored seven unanswered goals in the second half to put the game away.
Colin Dabney had a game-high four points with three goal and an assist. Tyler Fuhrman scored the two first quarter goals for the Mustangs and Balestrieri scored twice, as well. Chris Dashiell added a goal and two assists.
Dmitri Pecunes played the opening 50 minutes and stopped four shots. Kevin Cain made one save in relief. Callum Robinson caused six turnovers and had six ground balls. Connor Curro forced four turnovers.
James Weger (Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock) had three caused turnovers and five ground balls for the Blazers.
Hood travels to Alvernia on April 12.
