Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - Hood College led 5-4 at the half before a six-goal run by Gwynedd Mercy led the Griffins to a 10-6 win in non-conference men's lacrosse action.
Hood (1-4) opened the scoring with a goal by Tai Foster (Honolulu, Hawaii / Punahoe) with 11:20 to go in the first. Matt Richter tied the score a little over two minutes later, but Patrick O'Brien (Ridley, Pa. / Ridley) took a feed from Alex Villegas (New Windsor, Md. / Francis Scott Key) and sent it into the net for a 2-1 lead at the 3:05 mark.
Tommy Belmont scored the final goal of the first and the opening goal of the second quarter as Gwynedd Mercy (3-2) took a 3-2 lead. Tony McCraw made it a 4-2 game in favor of GMC before a three-goal run by Hood sent the visitors into the intermission with the lead.
Foster pulled the Blazers within one at 3:32 with the second of his three first half goals. Villegas picked up his second assist of the half, finding Brett Humphreys (Newark, Del. / Sanford), who tied the score with 2:02 on the clock. With just seven seconds left in the second quarter, Foster scored his third goal to send the Blazers into the break with the lead.
A four-goal third quarter was part of a 6-0 run that put the Griffins ahead 10-5 with 10:07 to play in the game. Hood broke the run with Jack Zuckerberg's (Silver Spring, Md. / John F. Kennedy) first career goal with 1:28 to play off an assist from Humphreys.
The Blazers' man down unit continued to shine, killing all eight man up opportunities for the Griffins.
Randolph Clark (Chesapeake, Md. / Northern) won 12-of-20 face offs and led all players with eight ground balls.
Foster had his second multi-goal game of the year, tying for game-high honors with three.
Defensively, James Weger (Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock) had four ground balls and caused two turnovers.
Joseph McCulloh (Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill) picked up his first start of the year in goaland made 15 saves in 50 minutes. John Martin (Thornton, Pa. / Garnet Valley) stopped four shots in relief.
McCraw and Mason Risner each had three goals for the Griffins and Belmont scored twice. Nico Belardo dished out five assists.
John Black made four saves.
Hood returns to Thomas Athletic Field to host the University of the District of Columbia, an NCAA Division II member, on March 19 at 3:30 p.m.
