Jeremy Mattoon Takes Over Men's Lacrosse Coaching Duties
FREDERICK, Md.--Hood College director of athletics Gib Romaine announced the hiring of former Husson University mentor Jeremy Mattoon to the positions of head men's lacrosse coach and fitness coordinator, effective August 2, 2010.
Mattoon inherits the head coaching reigns from Curt Foxx, who resigned in June after two seasons as the Blazers' head coach to take a similar position at Hendrix College in Conway, Ark. In addition to his head coaching duties, Mattoon will oversee the Gambrill Gym weight room and serve as the Blazers' fitness coordinator.
"I would like to thank Hood College, Dr. Volpe, Dr. White and Gib Romaine for allowing me the opportunity to become head men's lacrosse coach," said Mattoon. "I am extremely excited about the future of Hood Athletics and I look forward to the challenge of building on the recent success of the men's lacrosse program."
Originally from Corning, N.Y., Mattoon served as Husson's first-ever men's lacrosse mentor when the Eagles added men's lacrosse as a varsity sport in spring 2009. Mattoon also served as the director of the Swan Fitness Center at the University.
In Husson's inaugural season, Mattoon guided the Eagles to a 4-9 record, which included victories over Anna Maria and North Atlantic Conference foes Lyndon State, St. Joseph's (Maine) and Green Mountain.
Last season, the Eagles made significant strides, compiling a record of 10-8 and earning the right to host an NAC playoff game. Mattoon's top offensive threat, sophomore attack Ben Landry, led NCAA Division III in goals per game (4.44) and listed third in the nation in scoring (5.33 points per game). Landry, along with teammate and defenseman Matt Tabler, earned all-NAC accolades for their standout seasons. Two of Mattoon's freshmen, goalkeeper Tyler Quinn and attack Mitch Heaps, garnered NAC rookie of the week honors during the 2010 season, in addition to Landry's three NAC player of the week nods.
Prior to starting the Husson lacrosse program, Mattoon served as the head coach of the boys varsity lacrosse team at Saint John's Catholic Prep here in Frederick from 2006-08. In 2008, Mattoon and the Vikings posted a perfect 13-0 record and advanced to the MIAA "C" conference championship game. Following this stellar season, Mattoon was tabbed Frederick County Coach of the Year. Mattoon also taught four different history classes during his stint at Saint John's.
Mattoon began his head coaching career overseas with the HTHC Hamburg Warriors in Hamburg, Germany in July 2002. The touted Warriors advanced to the title game of the Northern German Lacrosse League twice. Mattoon claimed two more coach of the year distinctions for building the Warriors into a European powerhouse.
Mattoon is a 2006 graduate of the University of Maryland, University College with a bachelor's degree in history. He went on to earn a master's degree in secondary education from McDaniel College in May 2010.
Mattoon, who becomes the sixth head coach in Blazer men's lacrosse history, takes over a Hood squad that posted a record of 6-11 in its sixth season as a varsity program in 2010.
Mattoon is the proud father of a six-year-old son, Alexander.
