Late Rally Fuels Neumann's 13-11 Win Over Hood Men's Lax

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.--The Neumann College Knights (1-8) scored three goals in the final 4:19 to earn a 13-11 victory over the Hood College men's lacrosse team (1-11) Wednesday in a nonconference game at Drexel University.

Neumann ripped off the game's first three goals, including a pair by James McCauley, until Hood's Kris Miner found the back of the net at the 5:53 mark. The Knights built a 7-2 lead with 10:48 to play in the first half capped by an unassisted goal by Kevin Best, marking their largest lead of the game. Miner added consecutive scores just 37 seconds apart to make it 7-4 but Dominic Collichio narrowly beat the halftime buzzer with his third goal of the game with :01 left on the clock as the hosts held an 8-4 edge at the break.

Hood owned the third quarter, outscoring the Knights 4-1. Blake Rust netted a man-up goal while tallies by Troy Hubbard, Sofi Lazar and Dominique Shorter within a span of 2:41 pulled the Blazers to within 9-8 heading into the fourth quarter.

Matt Toth snapped the Blazer run with a goal at the 13:40 mark, but Hood quickly responded as Shorter scored 14 seconds later and then fed Lazar who pocketed the game-tying goal with 12:20 to go in the stanza. Shorter struck again off a pass from Michael Matteson to give Hood its first lead of the game, 11-10, with 9:04 to play.

But despite winning the final three face-offs, the Blazers were unable to convert on any of their five shot attempts. Neumann's Justin Mailloux scored twice and Kyle Gardner tacked on his second goal of the game with 11 seconds left.

Miner and Shorter both netted hat tricks while Hector Montoya won 17-of-25 face-offs and Nick O'Brien stopped seven shots in defeat. Shorter also scopped up 11 ground balls on the afternoon.

Hood hosts its final home game of the season Tuesday when St. Mary's College (Md.) travels to Thomas Athletic Field for a 4 p.m. Capital Athletic Conference game.
