Blazers Drop 14-9 Decision at Washington & Jefferson

Zach Keyser

WASHINGTON, Pa.--Freshman Troy Hubbard scored a career-high four goals but it was not enough as the Hood College men's lacrosse team (1-4) fell to the Washington & Jefferson College Presidents (1-1), 14-9, Saturday afternoon in nonconference action.

The Presidents struck first when James Lavery fed Andrew Wallick 5:16 into the first quarter. W&J struck again 27 seconds later when Zach Devilbiss cashed in on a man-advantage opportunity. On the next possession, George Mineff scooped up the groundball for Hood off the face-off and fed Dominique Shorter for Hood's first score of the day. After Sean Jasionowski gave the hosts a 3-1 edge with an unassisted goal, Shorter and Corey Roberts notched back-to-back goals for the Blazers and the two teams were deadlocked at 3-3 at the end of the period.

The Presidents outscored the Blazers 4-1 in the second quarter and led 7-4 at halftime.

Washington & Jefferson also had a strong third quarter, registering five goals, including three by Devilbiss. The Presidents stretched their lead to 14-6 on Devilbiss' seventh goal with 10:10 left in regulation. Three different Blazers found the back of the next down the stretch as Ryan Pretko, Hubbard and Sofiane Lazar pocketed tallies for the final margin.

Hector Montoya won seven face-offs and Nick O'Brien turned away 15 shots in defeat.

Hood returns to action Wednesday hosting Randolph-Macon College in a nonconference game at 3:30 p.m.
