Miner Nets Hat Trick in 13-10 Setback to Shenandoah

Mike Gallo

WINCHESTER, Va.--Sophomore Kris Miner netted a hat trick for the Hood College men's lacrosse team (1-2) in a 13-10 nonconference loss to Shenandoah University (1-0) Friday night.

Shenandoah's Stephen Mayor had a hand in 11 of the Hornets' 13 scores on the day, tallying nine goals and assisting on two others in the victory. Mayor scored early and often, ripping off two quick tallies just 1:24 into the contest. But Hood notched the next three goals, as Sofiane Lazar, Dominique Shorter and Miner all found the back of the net to put the Blazers up 3-2 with 4:21 left in the first quarter. The two squads ended the first period in a 4-4 tie.

The Blazers and Hornets matched goals again in the second quarter. Trailing 6-4, Hood scored three goals in less than two minutes to take a 7-6 advantage with 7:19 to play in the half. Corey Roberts, Nick Spicer and Lazar all scored for Hood. But Mayor registered his fourth score of the game with 5:43 to go in the period and the teams went into the break deadlocked at 7-7.

Mayor scored all four of Shenandoah's goals in what would prove to be the decisive third quarter, as Hood's Troy Hubbard accounted for the Blazers' only tally of the period. The Hornets held an 11-8 edge heading into the final quarter.

Miner and Blake Rust brought the Blazers to within 11-10 midway through the stanza, but the Hornet defense would deny the Blazers any more scoring chances while Shenandoah added two late scores for the final margin.

Nick O'Brien made five saves in the net for the Blazers while Hector Montoya won eight face-offs and George Mineff scooped up 11 ground balls in the losing effort.

Hood returns to action Monday hosting Marywood University at 3:30 p.m. at Thomas Athletic Field.
