Oconis Cited for Athletic and Academic Excellence

FREDERICK, Md.--Recent graduate Will Oconis of the Hood College men's lacrosse team was named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II at-large second team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Oconis, who earned his bachelor of arts degree in economics and global economy major last weekend and owned a 3.85 grade-point average, took home his second academic all-district selection in as many years and is one of only two Capital Athletic Conference student-athletes to earn this citation. Junior golfer Andrew Geyer of Wesley College garnered academic all-district first team honors.
To be nominated for this honor, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore and be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. The academic all-district at-large squads are comprised of student-athletes from the following sports: fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling. Hood is a member of District II, which encompasses Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C. and West Virginia.
The four-year starter on attack finished his Blazer career as the program's all-time leader in numerous categories. Oconis, a two-time team captain, is Hood's career leader in games played (46), assists (29), face-off wins (173) and ground balls (161) and lists second all-time in points (57) and goals (28).
This past spring, the native of Baltimore, Md., started all 17 games and scored seven goals with a team-high 15 assists, setting a single-season record. He also paced the squad in face-off wins (52) and ground balls (48).
The former Kenwood High School standout is a member of Omicron Delta Epsilon, a national economics honor society, and served as a teaching assistant in several economics and finance courses. Earlier this year, he earned the 2008 Excellence Award of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Baltimore Branch, awarded to a graduating senior with the highest academic achievement in economics. He has secured a job with the Federal Reserve as a research assistant.
