Hood Eighth in First NCAA Regional Rankings

Trevor Magnuski

INDIANAPOLIS - The Hood College men's basketball team is ranked eighth in the Mid-Atlantic Region in the first NCAA regional rankings of the 2013-14 season.

The criteria used for the NCAA regional rankings are the same applied when selecting teams for the NCAA Division III Championships once the automatic bids have been secured.

Results from games through February 9, 2014 were used for the initial rankings. The Blazers' 15-5 mark, both overall and in regional contests, was good enough to crack the top nine.

A total of 62 Division III men's squads will compete in the 2014 NCAA Championships. Pool A (automatic bids) will account for 42 of the participants. One bid will be awarded to a Pool B team (independent teams and teams from conferences not eligible for an automatic bid). The remaining 19 bids come from Pool C (at-large bids from teams that failed to win a conference and the remainder of Pool B).

The selection criteria for Pool C are applied nationally and no region is guaranteed a maximum or minimum number of bids.

Undefeated Cabrini is No. 1 in the Mid-Atlantic, followed by Scranton and Wesley, respectively. Commonwealth Conference rival Messiah is fourth in the region, while Alvernia ranks seventh, one place ahead of the Blazers.

With 58 total eligible teams, the Mid-Atlantic is tied for the second largest region with the West Region. The Northeast Region contains 75 eligible programs. Each region ranks 15 percent of its teams.

Two more sets of regional rankings will be announced (February 19 and February 26).
