Junghans Pumps in 47; Blazers Knock Off Bison in Double OT, 124-120

FREDERICK, Md.--It was a record-setting night for the Hood College men's basketball team (13-7, 7-4 CAC) in more ways than one as the Blazers registered a 124-120 double-overtime victory over Gallaudet University (5-15, 3-8 CAC) Saturday.

In the highest scoring game in the Capital Athletic Conference this season, the Blazers broke the program's single-game scoring record with 124 points, eclipsing the previous high of 114 set against Patrick Henry College in the 2005-06 season. Junior Ryan Junghans, who was limited to single digits for just the fourth time in his career Wednesday at Mary Washington, poured in a career-high 47 points, breaking the single-game scoring record previously held by Santo Provenzano (44) from the 2003-04 season.

Hood, trying to avoid the first four-game losing skid the program's five-year history, entertained a hot Gallaudet squad which had won three of its last four. The Blazers had swept the last three meetings with Gallaudet but the Bison wouldn't go quietly in this one.

The lead flipflopped six times in the first half but back-to-back layups by Jeff Willison and Junghans sent the Blazers into the lockerroom with a 44-36 edge.

The Blazers used a 17-8 run over the first 4:05 to assume their biggest lead of the contest, 61-47, at the 15:55 mark. Junghans netted 10 points in the spurt. Nearly three minutes later, Gallaudet's Jon Mowl converted a fast-break layup to cut the deficit to single digits (66-57). Later in the half, it was Mowl again who came up with a clutch three-pointer and hit a layup on consecutive possessions to draw the Bison even at 73-73 with 8:15 to go in regulation.

Mowl, who had the hot hand all night for the Bison, gave the visitors their first lead since the 6:34 mark of the first half on a jumper with 7:16 left to put Gallaudet on top, 77-75. The Blazers wouldn't go away though, and turned to Junghans for the big basket. The wily guard knocked down a triple from the top of the key with 43 seconds left to regain the lead for Hood, 91-90.

The Bison turned it over on their next possession and fouled Anthony Bennett, who went to the line for two. Bennett knocked down both foul shots to make it 93-90 Hood with 30 ticks left. But Mowl, who finished one trey shy of tying the CAC record for threes in a game, canned his sixth three-pointer of the game with 21 seconds left to knot the score at 93-93.

Hood had two chances at the potential game-winning bucket in the closing seconds. A jumper by Bennett was off the mark but the Blazers had a second chance under their own basket after the rebound deflected off a Bison defender out of bounds. Tim Abercrombie inbounded the ball to Mark McGlone who tried to draw contact but was whistled for the offensive foul, giving the Bison five seconds to pull off the dramatic victory. But a long three-point try by Mowl bounced off the front rim, sending the game into overtime.

Gallaudet scored on its first two possessions of OT on consecutive layups by Dan Fava and Chi Ming Pun. The Blazers countered with layups by Rian McHenry and Junghans. Abercrombie gave the Blazers a three-point edge on a pair of free throws with 1:21 to go, but Mowl would not be denied and once again drained a triple in the final minute to knot the score at 103-103, sending the contest into double overtime.

The Bison hit five three-pointers in the second overtime alone, but with the score knotted at 120-120 with 42 seconds left, McGlone and Abercrombie connected on four pressure free throws to give Hood its first overtime victory of the season in four tries.

Junghans was 15-of-25 from the field, 7-of-11 from distance and 10-of-10 from the foul line to account for his record-setting effort. He also registered a career-best six steals. Abercrombie, who was held without a field goal in the first half, was huge in the clutch for the Blazers, netting 15 of his season-high 20 points in the two overtime sessions. He also dished out seven assists and pulled down eight boards. McGlone was one rebound shy of a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds while Bennett finished with 12 and Willison added 10.

Mowl, who played nearly all 50 minutes of the double OT affair, fouled out with nine seconds left in double overtime after tallying 44 points in defeat including 10 three-point baskets. Lance Gonzalez registered 29 points while Fava notched a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

The Blazers, currently in third place in the CAC standings, host fourth-place St. Mary's College (Md.) Wednesday at 8 p.m.
