Field Hockey Drops 4-0 CAC Decision to St. Mary's
FREDERICK, Md.--Freshman Lauriann Parker scored a goal and assisted on two others for the St. Mary's College (Md.) Seahawks (8-5, 2-3 CAC) in a 4-0 Capital Athletic Conference victory over the Hood College field hockey team (4-10, 0-6 CAC) Wednesday afternoon at Thomas Athletic Field.
The Seahawks rattled off a slew of shots in the first half, but the Blazers withstood the barrage and surrendered just a single goal despite facing 21 attempts. Sophomore Susan Smith knocked in her second goal of the season in the sixth minute off a feed from Parker. The Blazers were unable to get a shot off in the first 35 minutes but junior goalie Anne Marie Hantman rejected 14 shots to keep the Blazers in it.
The St. Mary's attack did not relent in the second half and this time the Seahawks were able to connect on three more scores. Freshman Brooke Masimore notched her first tally of the season just 4:57 into the second half. Less than two minutes later, Parker launched a penalty stroke to the upper right corner of the cage to put the visitors up, 3-0. Classmate Ellen Hackstaff capped the scoring in the 48th minute with her second goal of the season.
Freshman Megan Cahill fired Hood's lone attempt of the contest but her shot was turned aside by starting keeper Emma Lauhoff. Sophomore Caitlin Cromer patrolled the cage for the final 17:20 as the duo combined on the shutout. Hantman finished with 23 saves for the Blazers, the second time this season she has amassed 20+ saves.
The Blazers close out the regular season Sunday hosting Wilson College at 1 p.m. at Thomas Athletic Field. Hood will recognize seniors Sarah Balukoff, Jen Graham, Brandy Noel and Lauren Perzan before the contest.
