Hood Falls In Overtime To Marywood, 2-1

Maria Smith
FREDERICK, Md.--Junior midfielder Brittany Beaton scored on a breakaway 1:58 into the first overtime period to lift the visiting Marywood University Pacers (5-8) to a 2-1 victory over the Hood College field hockey team (3-9) Friday afternoon at Thomas Athletic Field.
The game was scoreless for most of the first half despite a slew of earlier Marywood goal attempts. Hood keeper Anne Marie Hantman came up big for the Blazers with two sprawling kick saves during the frenzy. Marywood's junior defender Maggie Brittain got the Pacers on the board when she scored a goal off of a deflected shot by Jamie LaPointe. The seventh shot from Marywood, the goal was registered with six seconds remaining in the first half.
Hood came out strong in the second half, dominating the field and tallying five penalty corners through the 54th minute of regulation. On Hood's sixth penalty corner attempt, senior Brandy Noel sent the ball to fellow senior forward Lauren Perzan. Perzan redirected the ball to sophomore forward Maria Smith who found the cage for the third time this season. The goal serves as Hood's first against Marywood after facing off two times previously since the 2007 season.
Both teams kept pressing and made multiple attempts to take the lead though none were unsuccessful. Regulation ended in a 1-1 tie and Hood geared up for its third overtime game this season. Marywood netted the golden goal within the first two minutes of overtime, setting Hood's overtime performance record to 1-2 and continuing its five-game slide.
Marywood led Hood in shots (13-8), though the Blazers tallied more penalty corners (7-4). Both Hantman and Marywood keeper Jamie Bowman finished with five saves.
The Blazers travel to Baltimore to face the College of Notre Dame in a nonconference matchup Monday at 4:30 p.m.
