Second-Half Surge Lifts Mary Washington Over Hood Field Hockey

FREDERICKSBURG, Va.--The University of Mary Washington Eagles (8-5, 4-1 CAC) scored six second-half goals en route to an 8-1 Capital Athletic Conference win over the Hood College field hockey team (3-7, 0-5 CAC) Thursday afternoon.
Hood made a statement early when sophomore Sam Liptrap scored her first goal of the season just 30 seconds into the game. Freshman Megan Cahill was credited with the assist, the first of her collegiate career.
But from there, the Eagles took control and did not surrender another Blazer shot the rest of the day. Emma Jones notched the equalizer for the Eagles on a penalty stroke in the 20th minute, and Morgan Jones scored UMW's second goal just 38 seconds later which would prove to be the game-winner.
The Eagles registered six goals in the second half and posted their highest scoring output of the season. Hood's junior goalkeeper Anne Marie Hantman denied 11 Eagle shot attempts and allowed seven goals while freshamn Kaitlin McCloskey stopped three shots and gave up one goal in the final 16:37.
Hood returns to action Sunday hosting Cedar Crest College in a nonconference game at 1 p.m. at Thomas Athletic Field. In an effort to raise awareness for breast cancer, the Blazers will also be selling t-shirts as a fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
