Notre Dame Upends Hood Field Hockey, 2-1 in Overtime

AURORA, N.Y.--The No. 3-seeded Hood College field hockey team lost a heartbreaker to the No. 2 College of Notre Dame (Md.) Gators, falling 2-1 in overtime in the semifinal round of the 2006 Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference tournament at Wells College Saturday afternoon.

The loss drops the Blazers to 3-11 overall and sends them into the consolation matchup against Wells Sunday at 11 a.m. The Gators (4-9) advance to the championship and will take on top-seeded Wilson College for the title at 2 p.m.

Hood had a chance to get on the board first with just over 10 minutes remaining in the first half when Brandy Noel fired a point blank shot at the Gator cage, but Notre Dame goalie Amanda Arkwright made the clutch save. Notre Dame had a goal wiped away when Mandy Bathras beat Hood keeper Ashley Saylor, but the goal was recalled due to a Gator penalty.

Notre Dame drew first blood with 18:19 to play in the first period when Bathras found Ashley Demski to give the Gators a 1-0 lead, an advantage they would take into halftime.

In the second half, Notre Dame outshot the Blazers, 6-1, but one shot was all Christina Woody would need as she buried her fourth goal of the season off a pass from Justina Miller as the Blazers drew even with the Gators with under 10 minutes to play in the game.

In the overtime session, Saylor turned away two Gator shot attempts before Faith Wassink found the back of the cage for the game-winner at the 9:09 mark.

Saylor finished with eight saves in the losing cause for the Blazers while Arkwright tallied three saves for Dame.
